Nsebong Akpabio, the FRSC Commanding Officer (Zone 5), disclosed on Saturday at the 2013 annual FRSC retreat of Zone RS5 in Awka that from October 1,The Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will commence special intervention patrols on Onitsha-Asaba-Benin road from , as part of efforts to reduce road accidents during the remaining months.
The commanding Officer also said that the zonal retreat, involving Edo, Delta and Anambra states, was aimed at working out effective strategies to reduce road accidents in the South-South and South-East geopolitical zones.
“We expect more than 58-per-cent increase in traffic flow on the corridor and as such, the retreat is to get our personnel ready to manage traffic during the period.” “In so doing, we are commencing what we call special intervention patrol from Oct. 1 from Onitsha to Benin.” “We are mobilizing resources to ensure that in the course of our exercise, we hope to reduce road traffic crashes by 20 per cent and fatality index by 30 per cent,” he said. Akpabio said that the FRSC would deploy more personnel and vehicles to the coordinating command at Iselle-Ukwu in Delta during the period. “We are also focusing on critical areas such as public enlightenment and the creation of awareness for people to be aware that road traffic crashes don’t just occur but are caused,’’ he added.I hope this works out effectively to reduce accident on Onitsha-Benin Express road,and it will be wise for people to comply to their rules so we have no accident this "ember" month .
