North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un Executes His Own Uncle As A Traitor
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had his own uncle executed as a traitor last night. The secretive country’s state media branded Jang Song-Thaek ‘worse than a dog’ and said he had been executed immediately after he was sentenced to death by a military tribunal.
An official statement denouncing Jang as a traitor said he had ‘committed such hideous crime as attempting to overthrow the state by all sorts of intrigues and despicable methods with a wild ambition to grab the supreme poser of our party and state’.
The once-powerful Jang, who was seen as the real power behind the throne in North Korea, was dramatically removed from a Communist Party session by armed guards earlier this week. He was accused of forming factions against the state, corruption and ‘depraved’ acts such as womanising and drug and alcohol abuse. Jang had already been removed from all posts earlier this month including vice-chairman of the country’s top military body.
The move follows the execution of two of Jang’s closest advisors - Ri Yong-Ha and Jang Soo-Kil earlier in mid-November. Jang had mentored Kim Jong-un as he took the reins of power in the highly secretive country. And experts believe the execution is a bid by Kim to assert his authority and independence as leader. South Korean President Park Geun-hye warned the North was carrying out a ‘reign of terror’ to enforce the President’s position.
