Shell To Pay $84m Deal For Nigeria Oil Spills

The High Court has ordered the Shell company to pay $84m (£55m) to residents of the Bodo community in the Niger Delta for two oil spills. This came after a three-year legal battle in the High Court in London.

According to the Lawyers for 15,600 Nigerian fishermen say their clients will receive $3,300(N600,000) each for losses caused by the spills while the rest money $30m will be left for the community, which law firm Leigh Day says was "devastated by the two massive oil spills in 2008 and 2009".
Admitting the spills were “deeply regrettable”, the Managing Director of Shell’s Nigerian business SPDC, Mutiu Sunmonu said: “We’ve always wanted to compensate the community fairly and we are pleased to have reached agreement.”
